How to Engage Students: Engaging Ways to Review with Students Printer friendly format

When you follow the CPR method (see part 1 of this article), you’ll find that you’re reviewing a lot in the classroom. That can get old for students quickly if you’re just saying, “Now, let’s review.” Don’t do that. Instead, try these engaging review techniques:

Adopt/Adapt, Apply – After presenting content, you can simply ask students to take a few minutes to share with the people in their small group one thing they commit to adopting (or adapting) and applying. Adopt/Adapt, Apply is also effective in written form. Have students write down two or three things they will adopt/adapt and apply.

Ask each student to talk about which point is most important to him or her – in small groups have each student take 30 – 45 seconds to share a significant point that was covered.

Stand and Share Ideas – This creative review technique gets students up and moving and increases the energy level of the classroom. Simply have students stand up and find someone to share an idea they found valuable.

“Real quick, before we dismiss…” - This is a quick and effective review where you simply say, “We have about 2 minutes of class time left, but before we go I want to hear from you 10 things you’ve learned so far.” Ask for students to state out loud something they’ve learned that day, and continue this until at least 10 students have shared one idea.

Commit to a higher level of student engagement by creatively reviewing critical content throughout your class time. When you do, you’ll get more student involvement, your students will retain more, and you’ll experience less stress.
